UNBOUND. 5000 ceramic components. Permanent installation in The Post building, Vancouver, BC. 2024
7 columns up to 23’ long, 7’ wide; inhabiting a 3-storey atrium space 55ft’ long
Cascading down the light filled atrium are close to 5000 ceramic components pouring through 7 columns. As a site-specific installation, the translucent white, paper-thin porcelain components are hand-built, torn with serrated edges and imprinted with antique letters, referencing stamps from the heritage Canada Post building. These suspended components are linked by long strands, bridging the individual into a larger network of community.
The lightness and buoyancy of paper-thin porcelain is highlighted by the crisp folded edges of the ceramic origami-like birds. Flowing through the columns, the juxtaposition of the red birds references the freedom of flight in its potential to realize boundless perspectives and ambition to soar.
The flexibility and tenacity that this project has required in execution precisely correlates with its design intention within a busy workspace. The hope is for this piece to inspire a feeling of suspended pause as an interruption to the demanding workday, from which a fresh outlook or renewed determination can be unbound. Embedded into this work is an unruffled contemplative space to just observe: to let the mind coast, glide and settle: to momentarily suspend the busy mind.
