THIS GALLERY DISPLAYS WORK THAT HAS BEEN CREATED IN ASSEMBLAGES INDEPENDENT FROM LARGER GALLERY EXHIBITION PROJECTS. IT IS LISTED CHRONOLOGICALLY, STARTING WITH THE MOST RECENT.
‘Your Body is a Battleground’
Made in 2019, ‘Your Body is a Battleground’ is an assemblage of 9 ceramic sculptures created in response to the curated Gendered Voices exhibition series at the Italian Cultural Center in Vancouver. We were asked to create work exploring current notions of femininity. The title of this assemblage references the iconic work of feminist artist Barbara Kruger.
The cratered, rough surfaces, and simple 3’tall streamlined forms are specifically designed to embody a visceral response to the societal external gaze directed towards women, and the resulting internal narratives that encompass a complicated gendered experience with the body. Culturally, we are in an important time of personal expression and public critique, where the dialogue surrounding gender is highlighting the critical need to change, expand, and evolve. ‘Your Body is a Battleground’ uses abstraction to touch on this conversation.
Working with high fire porcelain, form and surface are informed by either photographic details taken from across the globe, or the play of fire in the soda kiln. The work explores notions of urban and natural landscapes, through simple organic forms, implied textural details, and the creation of a visual narrative through the use of multiple components.
